Why Won't My PDF Open? (And How to Repair It)
You double-click a PDF and get "the file is damaged and could not be repaired." Frustrating — but the document is often recoverable.

What "damaged" actually means
- Interrupted download or transfer — the file is truncated (missing its end).
- Broken cross-reference table — the PDF's internal index got corrupted.
- Wrong file — sometimes a .pdf is actually an HTML error page or a renamed file. (A real PDF starts with
%PDF-.)
How to repair it
- Open Repair PDF.
- Upload the broken file — it rebuilds the internal structure and recovers what's readable.
- Download the fixed copy.
If repair doesn't fully recover it
- Re-download the original (a truncated download is the #1 cause).
- Ask the sender to re-export it.
- If only some pages are damaged, use Split PDF to salvage the good ones.
